The preparatory committee for the 2020 review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty wrapped up its second session on Friday after adopting a chairman's summary calling on North Korea to return to the NPT.

The summary also urged Pyongyang to dismantle all its mass destruction weapons such as nuclear arms and ballistic missiles in a complete, verifiable and irreversible fashion.

North Korea declared in January 2003 that it was pulling out of the NPT as part of efforts "to protect the sovereignty of the country and the nation."

Meanwhile, the summary attached importance to maintaining the 2015 nuclear deal between six world powers and Iran aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear activities such as uranium enrichment.

U.S. President Donald Trump has called the pact "a deal with decayed foundations" that should never have been sealed. He has set a May 12 deadline to fix the agreement or walk away from it.

During the session in Geneva that began on April 23, the preparatory committee decided to convene the 2020 review conference of the NPT in New York from April 27 to May 22.
