TOKYO - Japan's upper house is preparing to hold hearings on a political funds scandal that has rattled the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the LDP secretary general in the chamber said Sunday.
The House of Councillors "will arrange a schedule so it does not hamper deliberations on a fiscal 2024 draft budget," Masaji Matsuyama said on a TV program, after the lower house's political ethics committee held sessions on the matter last week, one of which was attended by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Tokyo police mistakenly arrest Filipino man for allegedly overstaying
TOKYO - Tokyo police mistakenly arrested a Filipino man Saturday for allegedly overstaying his visa even though he was in the process of renewing his residence card, police said.
The technical intern in his 30s went to a police station voluntarily after an officer approached him at Ueno Station in Tokyo and asked him to show his residence card, which had expired. The man was quoted by police as saying he had "forgotten to apply."

Japan foreign minister says women's involvement key to peace efforts
TOKYO - Japan should pursue women's involvement in conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts as a key foreign policy to further contribute to global peace, Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said in a recent interview while acknowledging the "many challenges" her own nation faces in gender equality issues.

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian government said Sunday it is open to resuming the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 that went missing en route to Beijing nearly 10 years ago, citing a potential collaboration with a U.S. ocean exploration company.
Speaking at a ceremony organized by family members of the crash victims ahead of the anniversary of the Boeing 777's disappearance, Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook said he will try to persuade the Cabinet to approve the search.

Japan eyes rules for firms to disclose greenhouse gas emissions data
TOKYO - Japan's financial watchdog is considering obliging companies listed on the top-tier section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange to disclose information on greenhouse gas emissions throughout their supply chains.
The Financial Services Agency will set up a panel this month to work out the details of the envisioned policy in support of global efforts to accelerate decarbonization, according to its plan proposed at a meeting of the Financial System Council.

Japan agency warns of more quakes as temblors continue east of Tokyo
TOKYO - Japan's weather agency has warned of more earthquakes in Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo following a series of temblors in recent days, detecting a movement known as "slow slip" in tectonic plates off the coast.
The slow-slip event is believed to be occurring off the Boso Peninsula on the boundary between the continental plate and the Philippine Sea plate, according to the Geospatial Information Authority.
