U.S. forces dispatch 2 Ospreys after fatal crash of another in Japan
TOKYO - U.S. Forces Japan dispatched two Osprey aircraft to search for the missing crew of another that crashed earlier this week in southwestern Japan, prompting local leaders to express concern over their safety.
The tilt-rotor MV-22 Ospreys arrived at Amami airport in Kagoshima Prefecture in the morning as search operations continued following the crash Wednesday of a U.S. Air Force CV-22 that left a crew member dead and seven others missing.

Nuke ban treaty confab warns of "existential threat to humanity"
NEW YORK - Parties to a U.N. treaty banning nuclear weapons warned of the "existential threat to humanity" posed by nuclear arms and reaffirmed their commitment to the "prohibition and complete elimination" of the weapons in a declaration they adopted at the end of their five-day meeting on Friday.
While a draft of the declaration of the parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in New York stated opposition to nuclear sharing, whereby countries host nuclear bombs, such an explicit reference to the practice was removed from the final text.

Japan PM vows to phase out coal-fired power at climate summit
DUBAI - Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged Friday to take necessary measures to reduce Japan's reliance on coal-fired power generation, aiming to achieve its commitment to realizing carbon neutrality by 2050.
In a speech at a U.N. meeting on climate change in the United Arab Emirates, Kishida added Japan plans to enhance financial support for international lenders to aid developing nations in securing funds to tackle environmental issues.

South Korea places 1st spy satellite in orbit after North's launch
SEOUL - South Korea said Saturday its first spy satellite, launched the previous day on a U.S. rocket, has successfully entered orbit, just over a week after North Korea announced it had placed a reconnaissance satellite in orbit for the first time.

Japan, U.S., others vow to triple global nuclear energy by 2050
DUBAI - More than 20 countries, including Japan and the United States, vowed on Saturday to triple the world's nuclear energy capacity by 2050 to reduce global carbon emissions, according to their statement.
The declaration, released by the U.S. Department of Energy, points to the "key role of nuclear energy in achieving global net-zero greenhouse gas emissions" and comes as the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the U.N.
