Nintendo Co. said Wednesday it will develop a live-action film based on its hit "Legend of Zelda" video game series.

The movie will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's representative director and creator of several of the firm's best-known game franchises, including "Zelda" and "Super Mario," alongside Avi Arad, chairman of Arad Productions Inc. and producer of many films such as the popular "Spiderman" series.

It will be directed by Wes Ball, known for directing the "Maze Runner" series. Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. will handle the movie's worldwide theatrical distribution, although Nintendo did not give a release date.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-finance the project, with Nintendo providing more than 50 percent of the funding, the company said in a statement.

"We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it," Miyamoto posted on X, formerly called Twitter.

Nintendo reported record profits on Tuesday for the April-September period, with sales of software titles for its Switch game console growing 1.8 percent from a year earlier to 97.1 million copies in the six months, helped by the "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" title launched in May.

The announcement also follows the blockbuster success earlier this year of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," featuring Nintendo's iconic character.
