Three people were injured after being slashed by a man with knives Sunday on a rapid train to Kansai airport in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan, police said.
The 37-year-old man was arrested for alleged attempted murder at a station next to the airport, with an officer drawing his handgun and warning him to drop the weapons, the police said. He was in possession of three knives at the time of his arrest.
The suspect told the police he had trouble with a man on the train and that he was not acquainted with the three people who were slightly injured.
He was arrested at the Rinku-Town Station in Izumisano on suspicion of slashing the neck and temple of the 23-year-old man, who was in the same train car at around 10:25 a.m.
The suspect admitted to the allegation, the police said.
The police believe he also cut the hands of another passenger and the train's conductor, who was injured while intervening in the altercation.
About 150 people were on the train at the time of the incident, which affected a total of around 8,000 people as services on the line were temporarily suspended, according to the operator, West Japan Railway Co.
A 58-year-old man said he was on the train and saw two panicked foreign passengers run in from the next car, shouting in broken Japanese that someone had been stabbed.
A video posted on Twitter showed a police officer pointing a pistol at a man believed to be the suspect.
The man wore a face mask, held a knife in each hand and made threatening gestures toward several officers surrounding him.
