Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara lost the women's doubles final at the Australian Open on Sunday, falling short in their quest to become the first all-Japanese pair to win a Grand Slam.

Semifinalists last year, the 10th seeds were beaten 6-4, 6-3 by top seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, who won for the second straight year at Melbourne Park.

The Czechs wrapped up the match in 89 minutes, breaking their opponents in the opening game and holding serve throughout the first set, then winning three more break points in the second.

Aoyama, 35, was seeking her first Grand Slam title, while doubles specialist Shibahara, 24, was chasing her second career major following last year's French Open mixed doubles, which she won with Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof.
