Jan. 24, 2014 -- Tokyo Olympic organizing committee established, with Mori taking the helm as president.
Oct. 16, 2019 -- International Olympic Committee announces plan to relocate marathon and race walking events to Sapporo due to heat concerns.
Jan. 30, 2020 -- World Health Organization declares coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency.
Feb. 4 -- Tokyo Olympic organizing committee sets up task force to deal with coronavirus outbreak.
March 12 -- Olympic flame-lighting ceremony held at site of ancient Olympia in Greece without spectators.
March 24 -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, IOC President Thomas Bach agree to postpone Tokyo Olympics by one year.
March 30 -- IOC, Tokyo organizers agree to hold Olympics from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021.
April 7 -- Japanese government declares state of emergency for 7 prefectures including Tokyo to stem the spread of infections and extends it nationwide, fully lifting the declaration in late May.
Jan. 7, 2021 -- Japanese government declares another state of emergency for Tokyo metropolitan area following resurgence of coronavirus infections.
Feb. 3 -- Mori makes sexist remarks, saying meetings involving women tend to drag on.
Feb. 4 -- Mori apologizes and retracts his comments but says he has no intention to resign.
Feb. 4 -- IOC and International Paralympic Committee say Mori's apology closed controversy.
Feb. 9 -- IOC calls Mori's remarks "absolutely inappropriate" in another statement released following widespread criticism.
