A taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly hitting and killing a dove on a Tokyo street, police said, quoting him as saying that "roads are for humans and birds should have stepped back."

According to the police, Atsushi Ozawa deliberately hit several doves with his taxi on Nov. 13, after accelerating rapidly once the light turned green at an intersection in the city's Shinjuku district.

The police confirmed the 50-year-old Tokyo man killed a rock dove in the incident and arrested him Sunday on suspicion of violating the wildlife protection law, they said, adding that no passengers were in the vehicle at the time.

Nearby surveillance cameras and the taxi's dashboard camera captured the incident, the police said.
