Japan's Yuto Horigome won the men's skateboard street best trick at the X Games California on Saturday, rising to the top with his eighth and final attempt.

The Tokyo Olympic gold medalist executed a nollie backside 270 nose slide -- a rotating jump onto an obstacle before sliding along it on the nose of the board -- to finish above Americans Braden Hoban in second and Nyjah Huston in third.

"I'm really happy to have nailed it with my last attempt," Horigome said. "I of course wanted a medal, but nailing a big trick has been a bigger motivation."

"I could carry confidence trying the final trick."

In the women's street final, 14-year-old Japanese Liz Akama claimed silver and Tokyo Olympic winner Momiji Nishiya bronze, as 13-year-old Chloe Covell of Australia triumphed.

Covell scored 90.00 with her third and final run, bettering Akama's 87.66 and Nishiya's 86.66.

"It was my aim to be on the podium in my first X Games overseas, and I'm really happy," Akama said. "It's a good memory to be at the top of the standings, even just for a moment."
