Yoshihito Nishioka advanced to the third round of the French Open with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 win over Australian Max Purcell on Thursday.
The 27th seed from Japan took just over three hours to wrap up the contest against the 68th-ranked Purcell on Day 5 of the Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

"For my part, I was able to play the way I pictured wanting to play," said Nishioka, who went five sets in his first-round win over American JJ Wolf
"I've played a lot of tough matches, but getting through them has given me confidence."
Nishioka, who has never previously gone beyond the second round at the tournament, will face giant-killing Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild next. The world No. 172 caused a major upset by beating second seed Daniil Medvedev in the opening round.

In women's doubles, Japanese No. 7 seeds Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara were 7-5, 6-4 winners against Russian pair Ekaterina Alexandrova and Anastasia Potapova.
Japan's Miyu Kato and Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi, seeded 16th, won 6-2, 6-0 against Germany's Jule Niemeier and Caroline Dolehide of the United States.
