English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur announced the appointment Tuesday of former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou as the North London side's new head coach on a four-year contract.
The 57-year-old Australian has just finished winning a domestic treble in Scottish football with a Celtic side featuring several Japanese players, including star forward Kyogo Furuhashi.
His previous achievements include a 2019 J-League first-division championship with Yokohama F Marinos that broke a 15-year title drought for the high-profile Japanese club.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said Postecoglou would bring "a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play" to the club.
"He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy -- everything that is important to our club," Levy said in a statement.
Postecoglou departed Marinos for Celtic in the summer of 2021 and helped quickly revive the Glasgow side's fortunes. He made then Vissel Kobe marksman Furuhashi his first signing from Japan, followed by midfielder Reo Hatate and Samurai Blue forward Daizen Maeda, among others.
In his two seasons at Celtic Park, Postecoglou steered the Hoops to five out of six possible domestic trophies, with Saturday's 3-1 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final completing the historic treble.
Furuhashi has flourished into one of the league's biggest stars under the former Australian national team boss, winning both the Scottish Football Writers' Association Player of the Year and the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year this season.
In Tottenham, Postecoglou takes over a big-name club that has fallen short of its lofty goals while churning through a succession of high-profile managers in recent years. Spurs finished eighth this past season, missing out on European football next term.
The manager will become the first Australian to take charge of a Premier League side and begins his contract on July 1.
