Japan, China defense chiefs meet amid spats over Taiwan, Senkakus

SINGAPORE - The defense ministers of Japan and China on Saturday began talks in Singapore that are expected to center on spats over Taiwan and Chinese vessels' intrusions into waters near the Tokyo-controlled, Beijing-claimed Senkaku Islands as well as bilateral mechanisms to avoid contingencies.

Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada and his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu met on the margins of the annual Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, which is being held for three days through Sunday.

Japan, U.S., S. Korea to launch system to share N. Korea missile info

SINGAPORE - Japan, the United States and South Korea agreed Saturday to launch a system that will allow information about North Korean missiles to be shared in real-time by the end of this year, amid Pyongyang's repeated ballistic missile tests.

In a joint statement issued following their talks on the sidelines of the Asia Security Summit in Singapore, Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada and his U.S. and South Korean counterparts, Lloyd Austin and Lee Jong Sup, said they will "make further progress" toward making the new system operational "over the next few months."

Man dies, 3 missing after heavy rain pounds Japan

TOKYO - A man died and at least three people went missing after heavy rain pounded wide areas of Japan, local authorities said Saturday, with the weather agency warning of an increased risk of landslides and flooding of rivers in eastern Japan including Tokyo.

Thunderstorms were observed developing in succession from Friday through Saturday morning in western and central prefectures, causing concentrated heavy rainfall.

DUBLIN, Ohio - Hideki Matsuyama shot Friday's low round, a bogey-free 7-under 65, to climb into second place at the midway point of the Memorial Tournament.
