Japan wrapped up the judo world championships Sunday by taking gold in the mixed teams competition.

The Japanese team claimed their sixth straight world title in the category after fighting back for a 4-3 win over France in the final in Doha.

Newly crowned women's 70-kilogram world champion Saki Niizoe won a tiebreaking match to secure the gold after the teams were deadlocked 3-3 at the end of the regulation bouts.

France held a 3-2 lead going into the last scheduled contest, the women's 57 kg, which saw Haruka Funakubo fight back from a waza-ari point down to pin Sarah Leonie Cysique for ippon.

Niizoe, who lost her initial match to Margaux Pinot, was drawn to battle the former European champion again in the tiebreaker. Attacking errors proved costly for the Frenchwoman and her team, with three penalties delivering the bout and the gold medal to Japan.

The result avenged Japan's loss to France in the gold medal decider at the Tokyo Olympics.

"I'm happy to win the title," said Funakubo, who took 57-kg silver earlier in the championships. "I dropped a point in the final, but I kept on fighting, believing I'd get a chance."

Japan finished the tournament in Doha on top of the medal table with five gold, two silver and four bronze.
