Japan, China eye defense chiefs' talks in Singapore in June: source

TOKYO - Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada and his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu are expected to hold talks on the sidelines of a regional security meeting in Singapore in early June, a source close to bilateral relations said Monday.

The plan comes as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and other Group of Seven leaders affirmed the importance of dialogue with China in their summit in Hiroshima through Sunday.

China summons Japan envoy to protest G-7 statement, Tokyo counters

BEIJING - Beijing summoned Hideo Tarumi, Japan's ambassador to China, on Sunday to lodge a "solemn" protest over references to Taiwan and other issues related to the nation in Group of Seven statements made at a summit in Hiroshima, while the envoy offered a counterargument, the two countries said.

Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong expressed Beijing's "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" over the statements issued during the G-7 summit hosted by Japan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. Tarumi told Sun it is "only natural" that such references were made and urged China to change course, the Japanese Embassy said.

Nikkei ends at fresh 33-yr high on receding U.S. debt ceiling fears

TOKYO - The Nikkei index ended Monday at a fresh 33-year high after U.S. President Joe Biden expressed a positive outlook over negotiations on averting a default on the debt ceiling.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 278.47 points, or 0.90 percent, from Friday at 31,086.82, its highest level since July 26, 1990 when Japan was experiencing an asset price bubble.

The broader Topix index finished 14.21 points, or 0.66 percent, higher at 2,175.90, its highest close since Aug. 2, 1990.

Japan PM attack suspect to undergo psychiatric test for 3 months

WAKAYAMA, Japan - The suspect in an attack on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last month will undergo a psychiatric examination for about three months, sources close to the matter said Monday.

A summary court in Wakayama, western Japan, has granted a request from prosecutors to keep Ryuji Kimura detained for the examination, expected to begin soon, to fully assess his mental state at the time of the attack.

Biden says U.S.-China tensions to "thaw very shortly"

HIROSHIMA - U.S. President Joe Biden said Sunday he believes that heightened tensions between the United States and China will "thaw very shortly."

At a press conference in Hiroshima, Biden expressed disappointment that a Chinese spy balloon incident earlier this year spoiled the momentum to facilitate communication between senior officials of the two countries.

FOCUS: Kishida brings world to Hiroshima, but nuke message brings division

HIROSHIMA - The Group of Seven leaders' statement on a world without nuclear weapons restating their commitment to non-proliferation principles split experts by offering few surprises, but the Hiroshima summit found them nevertheless agreeing on the value of its symbolism.

G-7 leaders given replicas of paper crane made by A-bomb victim girl

HIROSHIMA - Leaders attending the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima over the weekend were given replica paper crane mementos designed in memory of a girl who died from radiation-induced leukemia 10 years after the 1945 atomic bombing of the city, a source close to the matter said Monday.

The souvenirs are based on a paper crane that sat beside Sadako Sasaki's deathbed. She died from her illness at the age of 12.

South Korea delegation arrives in Japan for Fukushima water inspection

TOKYO - A South Korean delegation arrived in Japan on Sunday for a six-day visit to assess the safety of Japan's planned release of treated radioactive water into the sea from the disaster-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The delegation of 21 experts in the nuclear reactor, radiation and other sectors was dispatched as concerns linger in South Korea over the potential impact of the treated water on the ocean environment.
