Shohei Ohtani struck out 10 batters on a frustrating day in which he left the mound with a lead before his Los Angeles Angels fell 8-5 to the Miami Marlins in 10 innings Saturday.
Going for his sixth win of the season, Ohtani allowed two runs on six hits in six innings. His first error in two years led to the visitors' first-inning run at Angel Stadium.
Ohtani walked three, two of which contributed to runs.
"Walks change the flow of the game. It was lame," Ohtani said.
Pinch-hitter Matt Thaiss singled in two runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to give the Angels a 3-2 lead that was erased the following inning by Jorge Soler's 17th home run off reliever Chase Silseth with a man on.
Ohtani went 0-for-4 at the plate with a walk, stole his seventh base of the year and grounded into a double play. And though the Angels tied it in the eighth, the Marlins put up four runs in the 10th to clinch it.
With the game tied 4-4 in the ninth, Ohtani came up with no outs and a man on first. He hit a bullet to third for the first out and threw his helmet when returning to the bench.
"That inning was our chance to win it. At the very least, I had to reach base." Ohtani said. "I'm swinging at tough pitches."
In Phoenix, Arizona, Masataka Yoshida went 2-for-3 and scored the tying run for the Boston Red Sox, who came from behind to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1.
Arizona's Scott McGough, a former Yakult Swallows closer, walked Yoshida but struck out five of the other six batters he faced.
"He's a pitcher I faced in huge situations in Japan, and it's great to be competing together in MLB," said Yoshida, who hit a walk-off homer against McGough in last year's Japan Series.
