North Korea earlier this week tested an underwater nuclear attack drone designed to generate tsunami to destroy enemy ships and ports, with the target area, located further away than in a previous test, successfully reached, the country's state-run media said Saturday.

The Haeil-2 drone traveled on an elliptical, figure eight-shaped course stretching 1,000 kilometers off North Korea's eastern coast for over 71 hours during the test from Tuesday to Friday, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

The claimed range of the drone would put Japanese coastal areas on the Sea of Japan within reach.

In the previous test in late March, the Haeil-1 drone traveled 600 km, according to North Korean media.

In the latest test, a warhead on the drone detonated in the targeted waters off a port in South Hamgyong Province, KCNA reported.

"The test perfectly proved the reliability of the underwater strategic weapon system and its fatal attack ability," the agency said.
