The 87-year-old prince was hospitalized around 6:40 p.m. at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center in Tokyo as a precaution due to his advanced age, the agency said.

Prince Hitachi, who is the younger brother of former Emperor Akihito and third in line to the throne, serves as president of the Japan-Denmark Society, honorary president of the Japan-Sweden Society and honorary president of the Japan-Belgium Society.

In 2011, he made a private visit to Britain with his wife Princess Hanako, 82, to attend an arts event in London and a reception hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
