Japan full-back Kotaro Matsushima, whose two-year contract with French side Clermont ended last month, has re-signed with his former club Tokyo Sungoliath, the Japan Rugby League One side said Monday.

The 29-year-old South African-born player, who scored five tries at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, played for Suntory (now Tokyo Sungoliath) in the previous Top League for seven seasons before he left for France in July 2020.

"I'm very happy to reunite with some familiar faces at Tokyo Sungoliath," Matsushima said in a statement.

"The team accepted my wish to test my skills overseas when I left for Clermont. It was necessary for me to take that career step, and only made possible by Sungoliath. I hope to repay them on the pitch next season."

Matsushima did not participate in Japan's recent internationals as he is recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained in April.
