Shohei Ohtani delivered two three-run homers and drove in a career-high eight runs Tuesday before the Los Angeles Angels came up agonizingly short in a 12-11, 11-inning loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Ohtani sent it to extra innings by tying the game 10-10 with his one-out ninth-inning three-run blast, launching Scott Barlow's 2-2 curveball high into Angel Stadium's right-field stands.

"Because there were runners on base, I was focused on having solid timing on my swings," Ohtani said. "It was a difficult game, but there were many good things to take away from it, so I want to put it behind me and do my best going forward."

Ohtani, who has 15 homers on the season, surpassed the high mark for RBIs in an MLB game by a Japanese player. Tadahito Iguchi drove in seven for the Chicago White Sox in 2006 and Hideki Matsui equaled that with the New York Yankees in 2009.

Ohtani had helped his team claw away at an early five-run deficit with another long three-run bomb to center in the sixth against starter Jonathan Heasley that cut the Royals' lead to 6-4.

Max Stassi brought the Halos to within a run with his RBI single later in the inning, but Bobby Witt Jr.'s seventh-inning RBI double for the Royals made it a two-run game.

Ohtani made it 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to center before Jared Walsh tied it with his RBI triple.

Kansas City regained the lead in the eighth, and went up 10-7 in the ninth on Witt's two-run homer. This set the stage for Ohtani in the bottom of the inning.

The Royals regained the lead 12-10 in the 11th on RBIs from Whit Merrifield and Kyle Isbel. Ohtani had a chance to win the game with one out and two on in the Angels' final at-bat, but miss-hit Daniel Mengden's 2-1 cutter. Ohtani's second sacrifice fly scored Tyler Wade from third, but left the Angels a run short.
