An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures as well as other parts of Japan on Tuesday morning, but no damage has been reported so far, the government said.
The 8:16 a.m. quake registered a lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7 in northern Ibaraki, while parts of Ibaraki, Fukushima, Tochigi and Saitama prefectures registered 4. No tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The quake originated in an inland part of Fukushima at a depth of about 93 kilometers, the agency said.
The temblor led Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train services to make an emergency stop to confirm safety, but operations later resumed with delays of up to 10 minutes, according to East Japan Railway Co.
No abnormalities were found at the Tokai No. 2 atomic power station on the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture as well as at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power plants, their operators said.
