South Korea reported over 200,000 new daily cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday as the highly transmissible Omicron variant continues to spread.

The nation confirmed 219,241 COVID-19 infections over a 24-hour period, marking another record high, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

A total of 3,492,686 people have tested positive for the virus with 8,266 deaths reported so far, bringing the fatality rate to 0.24 percent, the nation's health authorities said.

Coronavirus vaccine booster shots had been administered to 61.4 percent of South Koreans, the agency said.
