Japan finished fifth in the men's team ski jumping event at the Beijing Olympics on Monday, dashing Ryoyu Kobayashi's hopes of a third medal at the 2022 Games.

The Japan team of Kobayashi, his older brother Junshiro, Naoki Nakamura and Yukiya Sato scored 882.8 points to finish almost 60 points behind the gold medal-winning team from Austria.

Slovenia took silver and Germany bronze.

Ryoyu delivered two strong jumps of 134.0 and 132.5 meters, but the rest of the team lagged. Nakamura and Junshiro did not even reach the calculation point on their second jumps meaning they missed additional distance points.

"As a team, the result was very frustrating. But I think it's a good thing that everyone is feeling it," said Ryoyu. "I want to share this frustration with everyone and bring our level up together."

The 25-year-old said each team member's resilience is put to the test in a tough situation like this, with the temperature dropping to around minus 20 C and strong winds swirling.

"What we do from now is important," he said.

As for his effort, Ryoyu said, "In this world, if you just try to keep up you are left behind. So I want to step up my level bit by bit."

Japan last won an Olympic medal in the event when it claimed bronze in Sochi in 2014.

Ryoyu won men's normal hill gold and large hill silver earlier in the games but has now missed the podium in both the mixed team and men's team event despite his stellar individual performances in each.
