Prime Minister Boris Johnson proposed Monday hosting a virtual meeting of the Group of Seven leaders "in the coming days" to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, where the Taliban Islamist militant group has seized power.

Johnson made the proposal during telephone talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, the British prime minister's office said. Britain holds this year's presidency of the G-7.

In the telephone talks, Johnson stressed the need for the international community to take a unified approach on Afghanistan, both in terms of recognizing any future government and in working to prevent a humanitarian and refugee crisis, the office said.

The British and French leaders also confirmed they would work together on the "long-term future of Afghanistan", it said.

The Taliban declared victory in Afghanistan after they took control of the capital Kabul and President Ashraf Ghani fled the nation on Sunday, marking the group's return to power 20 years after its removal by U.S.-led forces.

The G-7 groups Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States as well as the European Union.
