Britain and Australia won the women's and men's BMX freestyle gold medals, respectively, claiming the first titles in the newly added Olympic event on Sunday.

Charlotte Worthington took the women's gold with a 97.50-point second run at Ariake Urban Sports Park, giving Britain its third BMX medal of the Tokyo Games after it won two in the racing events.

Australian Logan Martin put together a 93.30 first run to set the pace and when nobody could overhaul the score he was able to take victory lap second run with gold in the bag.

For Japan, Rim Nakamura finished best, his 85.10 second run in the men's event delivering a fifth-place finish. He missed out on winning Japan's first cycling medal at the Olympic Games since 2008 by more than five points.

In the women's, Minato Oike recovered from a poor first run to score 75.40, a total that was only good enough for seventh.
