Uta Abe beat France's Amandine Buchard in the women's under 52 kilogram final Sunday, capturing the gold medal on the second day of the judo competition at the Tokyo Olympics.

Two-time world champion Abe, who was making her Olympic debut, became the first Japanese to take the top podium spot in the weight division at an Olympics. The 21-year-old Abe is also the youngest judoka to win the women's 52 kg event.
