The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 1,387 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, topping the 1,000 mark for the first time in two days, as the upward trend in infections continues to stir concerns ahead of the start of the Olympics later this week.

The latest figure represents an increase of 557 from Tuesday last week, raising the seven-day rolling average of new cases in the capital to 1,180, up 49.3 percent from the previous week.

Two deaths have also been confirmed in the capital, currently under a fourth COVID-19 state of emergency until Aug. 22.

Infections in Tokyo had topped the 1,000 mark for five consecutive days until Sunday.

The public remains concerned that the Olympics, set to start on Friday, will lead to an expansion of infections amid the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, first detected in India.
