A Kumamon-themed store has opened in Shanghai, with a similar pop-up store scheduled to introduce the black bear-like mascot of southwestern Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture to many other parts of China.

Known as "Xiong Ben Xiong" in China, a 2.5-meter-tall inflatable Kumamon welcomes visitors at the entrance of the store set up in a large commercial facility in the suburbs of Shanghai. Some 60 items such as bags and cushions are available to buy.

The store is operated by a local animation firm with goods and exhibits approved by the Kumamoto prefectural government. Included is a panel with illustrations of Kumamoto Castle and a hot spring to be used as a spot to snap pictures.

"To prepare for the future after the coronavirus pandemic, we'd like to promote the prefecture's attractions by teaming up with a private firm," said Nobuhiro Fujimoto, head of Kumamoto Prefecture's office in Shanghai.

Many of the goods are available only at the shop, which will operate through June 30. The outlet will then feature in various regions including Beijing, according to the prefectural government.

"It is quite cute," said 26-year-old Yang Hang, who is a fan of Japanese animation characters and was seeing Kumamon for the first time.

Kumamon was initially created in March 2010 to promote Kumamoto ahead of the launch of the Kyushu shinkansen bullet train service the following year.

The mascot has subsequently gained nationwide popularity in Japan and has seen its profile increase overseas, particularly in other parts of Asia.
