The 38-year-old joined Cerezo out of high school in 2001 and also played for them in 2006 following a season-and-a-half spell with Mallorca in the Spanish La Liga.

"I've always worked hard hoping to eventually end my playing career at Cerezo Osaka," said Okubo, who was the J1 top scorer for three straight seasons from 2013 with Kawasaki Frontale. "I'll give my all on the pitch to contribute to winning."

Okubo, who also had spells at Vissel Kobe, FC Tokyo and Jubilo Iwata, played briefly for Wolfsburg's 2008-2009 Bundesliga-winning side alongside compatriot Makoto Hasebe.
