The death toll from Friday's 6.2 magnitude earthquake on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island has risen to 73 with over 700 others injured, authorities said Sunday as search and rescue efforts continued.

More bodies were recovered in Mamuju, the capital of West Sulawesi Province that was hard hit by the quake early on Friday, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Bodies have also been recovered in the nearby Majene district.

The quake destroyed more than 1,100 homes and saw roughly 28,000 people evacuated, the agency said, adding that searches for people trapped under buildings and rubble were continuing.

Relief supplies were distributed to those displaced by the quake, including tents, food, blankets and power generators, as well as face masks to protect against coronavirus infections.

Electricity has returned to half of the areas affected by the natural disaster, the agency said.

Authorities are urging residents in coastal areas to stay alert for a potential tsunami-causing aftershock.
