India said Saturday that the number of its coronavirus cases has exceeded 10 million, becoming the second country to see its cases reach that figure after the United States.
The gap between the two countries has been widening, however, with India seeing between 20,000 and 40,000 cases daily this month, a much slower pace of increase after a mid-September peak of between 90,000 and 100,000 cases.
India now has 10,004,599 confirmed cases, after recording 25,152 cases over the last 24-hour period, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The United States, in contrast, has over 16.4 million cases with 201,468 daily cases reported Thursday alone, according to the World Health Organization.
In terms of coronavirus-related deaths, India, with a population of over 1.3 billion, has the third most at 145,136, after the United States with over 300,000 deaths and Brazil with more than 180,000.
Emergency-use authorization has currently been sought from the Drugs Controller General of India for three COVID-19 vaccines, including one developed by U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. and an indigenous one by Bharat Biotech International Ltd.
