Japanese pitchers Masahiro Tanaka and Yoshihisa Hirano are among 147 players who have been declared free agents for the 2020-2021 offseason, according to a list issued by the Major League Baseball Players Association on Wednesday.
Tanaka, who reached double-digit wins in six of his seven seasons with the Yankees, posted a 78-46 record with a 3.74 ERA in 174 games for New York. In the most recent season, he went 3-3 with a 3.56 ERA in 10 starts over 48 innings.
Tanaka, who turns 32 on Nov. 1, spent all seven of his MLB seasons from 2014 as a Yankees starter.
Reliever Hirano, 36, started his MLB career with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018. He signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Mariners in January after spending two seasons with Arizona, but he missed most of summer camp because of a coronavirus infection.
Overall he is 9-9 with a 3.69 ERA in 131-2/3 innings pitched.
Other free agents include Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu, who led the majors in hitting with a .364 average this season, Philadelphia Phillies All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto and Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer, who finished the 60-game regular season with a 1.73 ERA.
Teams have until Nov. 1 to make qualifying offers to their eligible off-contract players. Players have until Nov. 11 to accept a qualifying offer.
The qualifying offer is determined by the average salary of the 125 highest-paid players for the prior season, roughly $18.9 million this winter.
