India said Saturday the death toll from the novel coronavirus has exceeded 100,000, becoming only the third country in the world after the United States and Brazil to surpass this figure.

The South Asian country reported earlier this week that its novel coronavirus cases had surpassed 6 million, only the second country to do so after the United States.

With 100,842 confirmed deaths, India's death toll accounts for roughly 10 percent of the global total.

The country surpassed the threshold after logging 1,069 new deaths from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, over a 24-hour period, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The ministry also reported 79,476 new cases on Saturday, taking the country's total to 6,473,544.

The United States leads the world with over 7 million confirmed cases and more than 200,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

Brazil has reported 4.8 million virus cases with around 144,000 deaths.
