The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 75 new coronavirus infections in the capital on Wednesday, dropping to a double-digit level for the first time in seven days.

But a Tokyo government official in charge of the coronavirus response sees Wednesday's two-digit figure as temporary, saying, "The situation is still tough as Tokyo must continue to be vigilant."

The tally, down from 106 on Tuesday, brought the total number of cases in Tokyo to 7,048. Of the 75 cases, 33 were in their 20s and 17 were in their 30s, according to the metropolitan government.

The number of confirmed cases related to nightlife establishments has risen recently, totaling 24 on Wednesday, of which nine were in Shinjuku, famous for various types of nightclubs, and three were in Ikebukuro, a major commercial and entertainment district, the official said.

Three out of the four who were under 10 years old were babies up to 11 months with mild symptoms, while none of the newly reported cases were aged 70 and older or had severe symptoms, according to the official.

Tokyo makes up around a third of the total confirmed cases in Japan.

The number of confirmed cases nationwide rose to 20,336, excluding 715 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo in February, according to a Kyodo News tally of figures reported by local governments. New daily infections across the country came to 182.

Tokyo has been striving to stem a rebound in infections since a nationwide state of emergency was lifted in late May. The pace of increase in virus infections in Japan had slowed as new cases in the capital peaked out after hitting 206 on April 17.
