Beijing municipal authorities said Thursday more than 150 coronavirus infections have been discovered over a one-week period since the detection of a cluster at the city's biggest wholesale market.

The local government said that 21 new infections were found Wednesday in the Chinese capital and that 14 of them were confirmed in the southwestern district of Fengtai, where the Xinfadi market is located.

The latest outbreak comes after a lull in new locally transmitted cases in Beijing that lasted roughly two months. The authorities have stepped up anti-epidemic measures, such as by controlling people's movements in and out of residential areas and shutting down elementary schools.

The local government said Wednesday it has tested about 356,000 people for the virus since last Saturday, including those who had recently visited the market.

Daily new infection cases reported by the authorities only refer to symptomatic patients. The number of new asymptomatic patients detected Wednesday was three.

Also in Hebei Province near Beijing, two patients of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, were found. They were both linked to the market.

On the mainland overall, 28 new coronavirus infections were confirmed Wednesday, bringing the total to 83,293, with 4,634 deaths, China's health authorities reported.
