A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was registered at a depth of 56.7 kilometers about 219 kilometers south-southeast of Severo-Kurilsk in the Kuril Islands, located north of Hokkaido, at around 11:50 a.m. Japan time.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 1,000 km of the quake's epicenter, and originally issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii. But this was lifted around an hour later.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued no alerts, but said slight tidal changes may occur on Japanese coasts.

The tremblor registered 1 in parts of Hokkaido and northeastern Japan on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, according to the agency.
