China's total coronavirus infection cases have surpassed 80,000 on the mainland, health authorities said Monday, with the death toll rising to over 2,900.

The authorities reported 202 new cases over a 24-hour period up to midnight Sunday, taking the total to 80,026, while reporting 42 new deaths, all of them in the worst-hit Hubei Province, to bring the total to 2,912.

Of the newly confirmed infections, six were outside Hubei, where most infections and deaths in the country have been concentrated. Over 44,000 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals after completing treatment, according to the authorities.
