A Japanese person with severe pneumonia has been hospitalized in Wuhan, a senior official of the Japanese Embassy in Beijing said Thursday.

The embassy is confirming whether the person has been infected by a new coronavirus that has spread and killed around 20 people in China, the official said.

If the person is diagnosed with the new virus, it would become the first confirmed case among Japanese nationals.
