Fifty-one children and three teachers were injured when a man sprayed them in a liquid chemical attack at a kindergarten in China's Yunnan Province earlier this week, local media reported Tuesday.
In the southwest city of Kaiyuan on Monday, a 23-year-old unemployed man entered the kindergarten after breaking through a wire fence and proceeded to spray liquid sodium hydroxide at children and teachers, the media quoted local authorities as saying.
Two people were seriously hurt without sustaining life-threatening injuries, the report said, adding the male suspect was detained by police.
The authorities were also quoted as saying that the man was motivated to take "revenge" on society.
China has seen a number of incidents involving attacks on schoolchildren in recent years.
Earlier this year, 20 pupils were injured in a hammer attack by a disgruntled maintenance worker at a downtown Beijing primary school.
