OAKVILLE, Canada - Japan's two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu revealed he had practiced ambitious quintuple jumps using a harness as part of his efforts to master the quadruple axel.

The training during the off-season was "intended to gain more rotational force" for the quad axel, Hanyu said after the practice session at the Autumn Classic International on Thursday.

At the practice session, Hanyu nailed a quad lutz, which he did not attempt last season.

Hanyu also said he will stick to his "Otonal" and "Origin" routines from last season for the short and free programs, after closing the previous season with a silver at March's world championships in Japan, where he finished 22.45 points behind Nathan Chen of the United States.

"I had regrets about not being able to deliver a perfect performance," he said. "I can't finish this program with a defeat."
