Masahiro Tanaka kept the Toronto Blue Jays off-balance with a three-hit, eight-inning performance on Sunday, helping the New York Yankees snap a two-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Tanaka (8-6) fell three outs short of a complete game shutout as Aroldis Chapman finished the game, though the Yankees closer needed 13 pitches and seven foul balls to retire Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the first of three batters he faced in the ninth.

Tanaka allowed the first batter he faced, Bo Bichette, to reach on an infield single, but he did not permit another hit through seven innings. The second hit he yielded was a single to Justin Smoak in the eighth.

"It was good I was able to get strikes on different pitches," said Tanaka, who struck out four and walked none in a 94-pitch effort.

"As far as pitching command goes, I would say I was throwing with accuracy today. I was focused facing every batter."

The Japanese right-hander was entrusted to begin the ninth, but he was relieved by Chapman after Brandon Dury led off with a clean single to left field.

Gio Urshela and Brett Gardner hit back-to-back doubles off Trent Thornton (4-8) in the fifth to produce the only run of the game.

At Fenway Park, Shohei Ohtani went 3-for-5 with two RBIs as the Los Angeles Angels edged the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in a 10-inning contest.

"Each of them (the three hits) was good. It's good to wrap up the (nine-game) road swing with a win because we'll be able to start at home on a good note," Ohtani said.

After Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun hit a solo homer that tied it in the eighth, Anthony Bemboom delivered a go-ahead, RBI single off Ryan Weber (1-2) with two outs in the 10th.

Bemboom had been called up from Triple-A Salt Lake before the game. He didn't start but entered the game at catcher in the eighth inning.

Elsewhere, the Cincinnati Reds have signed Junichi Tazawa on a minor-league contract and the 33-year-old Japanese will be sent to Double-A Chattanooga, the club said.

The Reds are the only team where no Japanese player has made the major league roster.

Tazawa, who was released in July by the Chicago Cubs where he had a brief stint with their Triple-A affiliate, has a career 21-26 record with a 4.12 ERA in 388 games played.
