Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his party's victory in a general election, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.

During a telephone conversation, Abe expressed his hope to boost bilateral ties and advance the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific in cooperation with Modi, the ministry said.

Modi, who became prime minister in 2014, responded that India has benefited from its strategic partnership with Japan and he hopes to lift the relationship to a higher level.

Abe and Modi are expected to meet next month in Japan when Modi attends a Group of 20 summit in Osaka.

Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party declared victory in the general election as it continues to hold a dominating lead in ongoing vote counting.
