Applications to buy tickets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will open to residents of Japan from May 9, organizers said Thursday.

Those wishing to purchase tickets can register from 10 a.m. that day on the official ticketing website. The lottery registration period runs until May 28.

The organizing committee said tickets would be priced to suit a wide range of budgets, with the cheapest general tickets from 2,500 yen ($22) and half of all tickets priced at 8,000 yen or less.

The results of the ticket lottery will be announced June 20, after a new law banning ticket scalping goes into effect on June 14.

The official ticket website is accessible at "https://ticket.tokyo2020.org/?culture=en-us".

Japanese residents wishing to purchase tickets from the official website must first register for Olympic IDs at "https://id.tokyo2020.org/". According to the organizers, over 2 million people had registered through March 31.

Those who are unable to secure tickets through the lottery can still request tickets during the first-come, first-serve phase starting in autumn 2019.

An English-language version of the pre-registration page will be launched soon, the organizers said. People living outside Japan will be able to seek tickets through authorized resellers in their respective countries.

The organizing committee announced a detailed Olympic competition schedule on Tuesday, including morning start times for finals traditionally held later in the day.
