Amazon.com Inc. has reached a deal for space in the iconic Chrysler Building in Manhattan, people familiar with the matter said Saturday.

The lease is for Amazon Go, the Seattle-based e-commerce behemoth's cashierless convenience store, the people told Kyodo News. Amazon declined to comment.

Earlier this week, the New York Post reported that Amazon was closing in on a lease in the Chrysler Building for a store with a space of about 10,000 square feet (about 930 square meters).

According to U.S. media reports from last year, Amazon had plans to open a cashierless store in Brookfield Place, a shopping mall across the street from One World Trade Center that attracts heavy foot traffic including many tourists.

Amazon Go debuted its first store in Seattle last January. Now it has a total of nine fully operational stores across the United States, located in Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago.

The appeal of the cashierless store is the convenience of quick shopping. Rather than paying for items with cash or with a swipe of a credit card, customers are automatically charged via the Amazon Go App on their smartphones as they pass a gate upon exiting the store.

Amazon Go utilizes artificial intelligence, censors and cameras mounted on the ceiling to detect when customers pick up items or put them back on the shelves.
