President Donald Trump plans to demand increased access to the Japanese market for U.S. companies when he meets Prime Minister Shinzo Abe next week in New York, a senior White House official indicated Friday.

"The U.S. would like to get more market access to Japan," the official was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

The United States "will see how talks go between Trump and Abe at the United Nations," the official reportedly said.

Abe and Trump are scheduled to meet Wednesday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Trade is expected to be a major issue because Trump has identified the U.S. trade deficit with Japan as problematic for his nation.

Trump has called for "fair" and "reciprocal" trade with major U.S. trading partners such as China, Mexico, Japan and the European Union.
