Online recruitment of the 80,000 volunteers to work for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will begin at 1 p.m. on Sept. 26, organizers said Wednesday.

The organizers will recruit volunteers aged 18 or older as of April 1, 2020 via a special website through early December. The deadline will be announced later.

Successful candidates will be offered uniforms, meals and insurance but will need to pay for their own accommodation and transport to Tokyo if they live outside the capital.

"I want various individuals to apply (to be volunteers) regardless of age, sex, nationality and whether they have disabilities or not," said Tokyo 2020 Vice Director General Yusuke Sakaue.

Separately, the Tokyo metropolitan government said it will begin recruiting 30,000 "city volunteers" to offer transport and sightseeing information for visitors to the Games. Applications can be sent via the internet, fax and post during the entry period from 1 p.m. on Sept. 26 to noon on Dec. 5.
