People in Japan reacted positively to the country's hard-earned 2-2 draw with Senegal in a World Cup group-stage match in Russia on Sunday and looked forward to their next encounter.

As the match started midnight Japan time, many went to work Monday morning with very limited sleep, but with pride and hope.

"I believe Japan will win their next match against Poland," said Masaki Sano, an 18-year-old Japanese college student who watched the game in Tokyo's Shibuya district along with thousands of other fans wearing Samurai Blue jerseys and flying national flags.

Shibuya also played host to fans from Senegal, who held a public viewing in a building in the entertainment district.

"Japan is a really good team," said Senegal fan Ba Abou. "I'm glad we drew."

At a public viewing in Nabari, Mie Prefecture, the hometown of Japan midfielder Hotaru Yamaguchi, Mamoru Ikegami, 81, said, "I was worried how Japan could do against a physically strong Senegalese team, but our side outperformed Senegal."

However, not everyone was happy.

Hirokuni Masuda, 37, who watched the match in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture, the hometown of captain Makoto Hasebe, said of the draw, "I wanted Japan to win, so it's disappointing."
