Honda Motor Co. said Monday its cumulative sales in China hit 10 million units as of the end of May, a mark it took 20 years to reach, helped by efforts to build vehicles tailored to local needs.

After surpassing annual Chinese sales of 1 million units in 2015, Honda had sales of 1.26 million in 2016 and over 1.45 million in 2017, with its Accord sedan and CR-V sport utility vehicle as well as models introduced specifically for the local market popular, it said.

Honda sells vehicles through joint ventures Guangqi Honda Automobile Co. and Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., which sold 6.1 million units and 3.9 million units, respectively, since the Japanese manufacturer entered the Chinese market in 1998.
