The Los Angeles Angels said Thursday that Shohei Ohtani will not make his scheduled start on Sunday at the New York Yankees, nixing the highly anticipated pitching matchup between the two-way phenom and his Japanese compatriot Masahiro Tanaka.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said it was "workload management."

"There's so much on his plate on what he has to do that we're going to push him back a little," Scioscia said. "He's fine."

Ohtani himself said he's fine, adding that the change was probably being made because he threw 110 pitches last Sunday, his most in the majors.

"There's nothing wrong with me physically so I think it's because I threw a lot of pitches," Ohtani said. "I'll be sure to be ready for my next start."

"It's the team's decision. It's not up to me to decide when I pitch or don't pitch."

Ohtani, though, feels he will be in the Angels' lineup to bat against Tanaka on Sunday.

"I'll be at the plate, I think. At this rate, I'm sure I'll get the chance to pitch against him somewhere down the line. I just need to be prepared to pitch well when that time comes around," Ohtani said.

(Shohei Ohtani, L, will have to wait to pitch against Masahiro Tanaka.)
