Masahiro Tanaka made up for last week's sloppy pitching by working 6-2/3 effective innings as the New York Yankees crushed the Minnesota Twins 14-1 on a chilly Monday evening.

Tanaka (3-2), who allowed seven runs in five innings in his previous start last Tuesday, limited the damage to a run and three hits while striking out five and walking two at Yankee Stadium.

"Throughout the game I was able stick to my pitching plan," said Tanaka, who improved his ERA to 5.28.

"My fastballs were great compared to my other outings so naturally I threw more of them," he said.

The fifth-year right-hander tossed one-hit ball over four innings before a hit batsman and a Jason Castro single put runners on first and second with two out in the fifth. Brian Dozier then singled off Tanaka to drive home the Twins' sole run.

For the home team, Gary Sanchez opened the scoring with a two-run double off Jake Odorizzi (1-2) in the bottom of the first. All but one hitter in the Yankees' starting lineup had at least one hit, with Didi Gregorius and Tyler Austin driving in four runs each to lead a 13-hit attack.

It was the Yankees' first three-game winning streak under new manager Aaron Boone.

After the game, Tanaka, who was booed off the Yankee Stadium mound last week, said being satisfied with his performance in one game doesn't mean he is not going to try and get better.

Should Tanaka continue to pitch on five days' rest, he could start in the finale of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Sunday and face Shohei Ohtani.

"You're already talking about my next start? Let me get my rest for today," Tanaka said to reporters.
