The Olympic Athlete from Russia team took home the men's ice hockey gold at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics with a 4-3 overtime win over Germany on Sunday.

The victory marks the first time Russian hockey players climbed to the top of an Olympic podium since the Unified Team, which fielded athletes from former member states of the Soviet Union, did so at the 1992 Albertville Games.

In a seesaw goal-filled game, Kirill Kaprizov delivered a one-timer off a pass from Nikita Gusev 9:11 into overtime to break German hearts.

Germany's goalkeeper Danny Aus Den Birken had his net on lockdown throughout most of the first 20-minute period at Gangneung Hockey Centre, deflecting one Russian shot after another until, with just half a second on the clock, defender Vyacheslav Voinov opened the scoring for OAR with a slap shot down the middle.

Luck was back on Germany's side in the second period, with forward Felix Schutz's shot from an awkward angle coming off OAR keeper Vasili Koshechkin's arm, evening the score with just over 10 minutes to go in the third.

The shots flew in the final period as both squads looked to pull ahead. Gusev scored first from beside the net at 53:21, but there was no time to celebrate as Germany's Dominik Kahun, left wide open in front of the goal, answered just seconds later.

It looked like Germany was going to run away with the gold after another point from defender Jonas Muller gave it the first lead of the game. But with less than a minute left and down a man on a penalty, Gusev dove stick outstretched toward a loose puck to make it 3-3 and take the game into overtime.

While a silver medal may not have been the result Germany was hoping for, it is still its best showing in 90 years competing in the sport at the Olympics. Its previous best finishes were bronze medals in 1932 and 1976, the latter as West Germany.
